Owner`s Statement
J&I ARTS began more than 25 years ago with a mission of bringing works of art off the shelves and out of the closets and selling them to those who would have an appreciation for them. It is said that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ but if engravings and literature are left to collect dust in a closet or on a bookshelf, then nobody has the opportunity of enjoying it. We have collected a very large inventory of engravings, literature, and other gifts, and now offer them at reasonable prices for your enjoyment.

NICOLL - "AN EAST WIND" - 1886
[Mod art]
$20.00

STEEL ENGRAVING – “AN EAST WIND” from the etching by Nicoll,  published in 1886.  This engraving is in excellent condition.  The picture measures 10 1/2” x 7 1/4”, and is matted to 11” x 14” for easy framing.

At the annual of the American Water-Color Society, Mr. J. C. Nicoll has been represented by many marine drawings, and recently he has turned his attention to etching, and become one of the founders of the New York Etching Club.  The subject chosen for his present venture is favorable for the exercise not only of his special talents but of the etcher’s needle, because, as Mr. Hamerton once wrote in connection with another picture, it composes itself so naturally, and its effect of chair-oscuro is so powerful.    It was of a similar work by the same etcher that the “Art Journal” said, “The coast-line is rocky, and, in giving the texture of the water-worn granite as well as breaking surf its shower of spray, the artist shows that his study has been earnest as well as conscientious.”   Mr. Nocoll’s studio is in the well-known building, No. 51 East Tenth Street, where Frederick E. Church, George H. Boughton, Sandford R. Gifford, J. G. Brown, M. F. H. De Hass, and Albert Bierstadt, have held the palette.  The work of his prime is yet to come.  Two of his best water-colors were in the Paris Exposition of 1878.
