An etching by R. A. Rajon of a famous picture by Gerome entitled :”Greeks Prayer,” the scene of which is laid in the Greek church. The worshipers appear to be surrounded by few of the paraphernalia of ordinary Roman worship. All that we see is a wall marked with geometrical designs, two young worshipers on their knees with hands extended as if in supplication, and an old man behind them, standing with bowed head and hanging arms. The sole article of furniture is a candlestick in the corner with an unlighted candle. Gerome’s seems to have been to present primarily the figures and faces of the worshipers and those who know him will not be surprised that he should have contended himself with such an inspiration. The drawing, of course, is perfection itself, and the color, though probably a little hard and metallic, as is his wont, nevertheless shows the hand of a skilled painter. To draw as well as Gerome does and to be a superb pictorial colorist at the same time would, perhaps, be too much to expect. Gerome, however, is an extraordinary man, and no country in the world has appreciated his work more, or has persistently paid better price for it, than the United State of America. He has received all the honors that French can bestow upon a favorite painter. His health for some time has been delicate, and the world has no doubt seen him at his best. It is a grave question whether or not he will ever again equal the magnificent composition of his prime. The engraver who takes his work and multiplies it far and wide does him justice, and the public, in many cases, infinite pleasure.
