Owner`s Statement
J&I ARTS began more than 25 years ago with a mission of bringing works of art off the shelves and out of the closets and selling them to those who would have an appreciation for them. It is said that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,’ but if engravings and literature are left to collect dust in a closet or on a bookshelf, then nobody has the opportunity of enjoying it. We have collected a very large inventory of engravings, literature, and other gifts, and now offer them at reasonable prices for your enjoyment.

ART JOURNAL FOR 1876 by D. APPLETON & CO. $200.00

THE ART JOURNAL – by D. APPLETON & CO., published in 1876.  For many years, in the mid to latter part of the 1800’s, Appleton’s published one of these Art Journals on an annual basis.  They were designed to enlighten the general public in all areas of art, from fine art to architecture, sculpture, and everything in between.  The art includes from Genre, Animals, Religious, to Mythical and Historical.  This is a fine specimen of the 1876 edition.  It features a fine Moroccan leather cover, with marble paper on the inside cover.  The edges of the pages are gold leaf, and are still in mirror like condition.  The only flaws to this book are a few minor scraps to the cover, and the fact that it was once owned by the Museum of Fine Arts, MacArthur Park, Little Rock, Arkansas, who put their stamp on several pages.  The binding is tight, and the pages are very clean for a book of this age.  I found no foxing on the pages.  There is, also, an original invoice from Appleton’s to the Little Rock Oil & Compress Company, dated 1883, pasted to the first page.  The cover of the book measures 13” x 10 ¾”, the pages are 12 ½” x 9 ½”.  The book contains 380 pages.  There are thirty-six fine steel engravings, thirty-two from famous paintings, and four from sculptures.  The book is also illustrated with wood engravings throughout.  The articles are too numerous to list all of them, but to mention a few:  American Painters, Homes of America, and The Centennial Exhibition.

Below is a list of the steel engravings, which are all present.
