THE ART JOURNAL – by D. APPLETON & CO., published in 1880.  For many years, in the mid to latter part of the 1800’s, Appleton’s published one of these Art Journals on an annual basis.  They were designed to enlighten the general public in all areas of art, from fine art to architecture, sculpture, and everything in between.  The art includes from Animals, Genre, Religious, to Mythical and Historical.  This is a fine specimen of the 1880 edition.  It features a fine Moroccan leather cover, with marble paper on the inside cover.  The edges of the pages are gold leaf, and are still in mirror like condition.  The only flaws to this book are a few minor scraps to the cover, and the fact that it was once owned by the Museum of the Arts, MacArthur Park, Little Rock, Arkansas, who put their stamp on several pages.  The binding is tight, and the pages are very clean for a book of this age.  I found no foxing on any of the pages.  The cover of the book measures 13” x 10 ¾”, the pages are 12 ½” x 9 ½”.  The book contains 380 pages.  There are thirty-six fine steel engravings, twenty-nine from famous paintings, and seven from sculptures.  The book is also illustrated with wood engravings throughout.  The articles are too numerous to list all of them, but to mention a few:  American Painters, British Painters, and articles concerning the New York art scene.
