“Glenora Falls” is located in the northwestern part of New York State, known as the Finger Lakes Region. Glenora Falls is on the western side of Seneca Lake, which is one of the long narrow lakes, which the name of the region is derived from. The area above the falls is filled with lush woodlands. The layers of rock from which the falls descend add to the natural color of the scene.
Although Charles Sawyer is known to have lived and worked in Farmington, Maine, he moved to Concord New Hampshire in the early 1920’s. From there, he made excursions into the White Mountains and was able to capture the scenic beauty and natural geologic phenomenon of the area. Many of his pictures are of mountains and lakes or rivers; or of a more artist nature of flowers and trees taken at a point in the year when they were in full bloom, when the colors of the scene were at there best. His travels took him to all of the New England States and New York, and in the 1920’s he traveled to California twice, where he visited Yosemite and the surrounding areas.
This is a hand-colored photograph by Charles Sawyer of Concord, New Hampshire. This photograph has never been framed. It was stored in an attic for many years after the Sawyer Studio closed. The colors of the picture have been preserved in excellent condition. The picture measures 4” x 6”. Sawyer's photographs are highly collectible, and compare in quality to Wallace Nutting prints.
